Marine Waste Collection Scoop

Marine Waste Collection Scoop

Our customer based in the Port of Liverpool approached Twenty20 Engineering with an unusual problem. They needed to ensure that Liverpool Docks were kept clear of debris and floating rubbish as this is a hazard to vessels operating in the port. However, they did not have the capital to invest in a vessel designed for this type of work and could not upgrade any existing vessels to carry out the works. During the initial consultation the following specification was developed:

The scoop must have no moving parts

The scoop must have a SWL of 3000kg and a FOS of 1.25

The scoop must be lightweight and easily moveable.

The scoop must operate with a double knuckle boom crane with a fixed hook.

The crane must should not enter the water when operating the scoop.

Further discussion with Briggs Marine lead to the agreement of a Gold level Package, with additional mechanical analysis. The technical drawing pack and mechanical analysis report was delivered shortly after the contract was awarded. For this project there was no real need for prototyping, however the final manufactured scoop was independently inspected and load tested before commissioning.

Although Briggs Marine felt confident managing the build of the design, the were unsure of realistic costings and did not have a working knowledge of local fabricators. Twenty20 was able to provide this for the laser cutting of the material and welding by 2 companies within our trusted network of manufacturers and fabricators.
